ALWAYS REMEMBER: PEARL HARBOR

We must always remember what happened at Pearl Harbor 66 years ago today, always remember the military and civilian lives lost that day, and always remember the importance of national security in a modern world.

We should always remember what happened on that "day of infamy" as well as what brought about a pre-emptive strike on the United States Pacific Fleet Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Great forces of profit-making and war-making brought about this conflict. A peaceful nation today, Japan at the time was hell-bent on ruling the East. The U.S. attempted to stall Japan from doing just that, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt brought trade embargoes against Japan, and then eventually an oil embargo. The oil embargo pushed the Empire of Japan over the edge.

The attack on Pearl Harbor was horrific, bloody and surreal. Yet our military men and women acted as best they could, bravely and quickly. Despite our courage, it was a tragic day for us-the result of our own delayed international intelligence to our military in the Pacific and the work of a fierce military aggressor using a deadly sneak attack. Waves of aircraft bombers and fighters rained death on our shocked Pacific Fleet while submarines shot torpedoes. The firepower sunk U.S. destroyers and battleships, killing and wounding thousands of our military and civilian people.

The thousands of Americans who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, must always be remembered. Their deaths remind us why U.S. soldiers must have the best ground and air intelligence available, must be given the best materials for battle, and must be treated with the greatest respect by our nation and our leaders. We may spend trillions on weapons and on wars, but if we don't give our men and women in uniform the best intelligence and best tools, treat them with the highest dignity and provide the best care at home, we've done our country and ourselves a huge dishonor. So let's remember, always, those who serve us every day here and overseas.

Finally, Pearl Harbor is a reminder of how important national security is. Since 9/11, we have a greater sense about how important national security is. Its importance is not only in preventing attacks on American ports and cities, but also about creating peace in the world so that fewer such attacks are schemed. Yes, we will always have enemies. For that reason, we must be vigilant, prepare for the worst, and work for peace. That means being prepared economically at home, investing now in our own energy resources, generating a new crop of fuels that are good for our economy and safe for our environment.

Remembering is an act of reverence, a reverence for learning from the past. Let's always remember Pearl Harbor, its brave men and women, and its call to national security.
