COMMISSIONER GREG BECK AND BUSINESSMAN JIM WINTERS QUALIFY FOR DEMOCRATIC NOMINATING CAUCUS

Out of many potential candidates for the Democratic sheriff nomination on March 15, the Hamilton County Democratic Party has received qualifying papers from two candidates--County Commissioner Greg Beck and businessman Jim Winters.

Deputy Chief Allen Branum, whose name has been mentioned locally as a possible candidate for the Democratic sheriff nomination, has decided to continue on as a candidate for interim sheriff.

In a conversation with HCDP Chairman John Bailes on Friday, Chief Deputy Branum declared that "I have chosen not to pursue elected office. I am going to stay focused on my responsibilities in the sheriff's department and be a good leader for law enforcement in the county."

County Commissioner Greg Beck and businessman Jim Winters have filed the required paperwork with the Hamilton County Democratic Party to be considered for the Democratic nomination in the August 7th election. Commissioner Beck is also a Chattanooga City Court Officer, and Jim Winters is a former law enforcement officer.

Commissioner Beck says, if nominated, he can bring "thirty-five (35) years experience in work among youth and families and a comprehensive background in social service and community development." Commissioner Beck's career includes being a crew leader with Combustion Engineering Nuclear Division, a president of a small company created to assist low-income individuals, a director of an outreach project (The Action Group) to inner city teens, an executive director of the Roanoke Community Center, an executive director of the Bethlehem Community Center, a Deputy-Sheriff with the Hamilton County Sheriff Department, a Chattanooga City Court Officer, and to his current role as Hamilton County Commissioner for District 5. Commissioner Beck was elected in 2006.

Mr. Jim Winters says, if nominated, he would bring his "many years of law enforcement experience and business skills to the table. I want to make a difference in law enforcement so that we can create a safe and good community. We can do that by doing away with public corruption and focus on the problems of narcotics and schools. I'll be an ally and a team player in the sheriff's department, not a dictator." Mr. Winters' career spans 30+ years, from being an East Ridge Detective Lieutenant in charge of major crimes and narcotics, the owner of Winters Companies, Inc., a dive master with Hamilton County Rescue and Chattanooga STARS Rescue Team, a medical/legal forensic death investigator for Hamilton County and an army veteran. He has been a charter member of the Hazard Material Response Team and many civic organizations, such as the Tennessee Public Health Association, the American Legion, and the Shriners.

Way to go guys. We selected Greg Beck as our candidate for sheriff. Mr. Beck is not qualified for this position. He has no law enforcment experience and his high school education is not an advanced degree in criminal justice. Mr. Beck currently serves as a handmaiden to a city judge. City court exposes Mr. Beck to lots of traffic and environmental concerns but it in no way prepares him to serve as sheriff. This decision will undoubtedly lead to a republican victory in August.

Were you not aware that was the Democratic Partys' intention in the first place???
They proved it when they nominated Mr. Beck. There was a "rumor" that was their intention, and they proved it on March 15th when they nominated the most un-qualified person for the Sheriff's position. Mr. Winters had law enforcement experience, he has a degree in criminal justice. Mr. Winters has been a law enforcement officer and worked the streets. He knows the devastion that crime has on the common man. He has not been corrupted by the system. But then again, that is probably why they didn't nominate him. They could not control him like a puppet on a string the way they are Mr. Beck.
