Our Party BlogHave your say about all things democraticJune 17, 2008DEMOCRATS CELEBRATE AT FIRST ANNUAL MARILYN LLOYD DINNEROver 300 Democrats gathered for the first annual Marilyn Lloyd Dinner Monday night at the Chattanooga ChooChoo. The dinner honored Congresswoman Marilyn Lloyd, who represented Tennessee's 3rd District from 1975 through 1995 in the U. S. House of Representatives in Washington DC. Congressman Bart Gordon (D-TN) and Congressman Heath Shuler (D-NC) traveled to Chattanooga to join the celebration. During the dinner, Democrats recalled the 1976 Carter-Sasser-Lloyd campaign during which Jimmy Carter was elected President, Jim Sasser upset incumbent U.S. Senator Bill Brock of Chattanooga, and Mrs. Lloyd was re-elected to her 2nd term. Sasser's son, Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Gray Sasser, introduced Congresswoman Lloyd, and Jim Hall read greetings from former President Carter. State Senator Andy Berke, State Representative Joanne Favors, and County Commissioner and Democratic nominee for Hamilton County Sheriff Greg Beck were also present and addressed the crowd. At the dinner, Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman John Bailes announced the creation of the "Marilyn Lloyd Scholarship." Starting in the spring of 2009, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a Hamilton County public high school graduate planning to pursue a degree in public service. Post a Reply...
