Our Party BlogHave your say about all things democraticJune 4, 2008OBAMA CLAIMS DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENT
Last night, as Senator Barack Obama claimed the Democratic presidential nomination, I realized how much history was being made by our party in America. We have accomplished at least two firsts. Number one, we have picked an African-American to run as the Democratic nominee for President to win this November. This is historical not just because of race, not only because of Obama's electrifying speeches, not only because of his message of change, but also because of our transformational power as Americans to get beyond race and to come together for change and hope. Number two, we have participated in a primary season that took in every state and territory so that every voter had a chance to voice her or his opinion at the polls. Making that happen was the enduring and inspirational former First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton, who fell short of Obama in delegate votes. This is historical not only because Senator Clinton came close to being (if she had won) the first female Democratic nominee for President, but also because she displays all of the characteristics that could still make her President some day. I think you can agree with me when I say that both candidates, an American woman and an African-American man, have inspired us and fought for all of us. We can be proud of them both. So don't let anyone tell you that the 50-state contest hurt us. On the contrary, it helped us. These two Senators engaged voters in every state, bringing millions of voters to the polls for the first time in a primary. We succeeded as Democrats in letting every state vote because we had two great primary candidates fighting all the way to the end. They both have made me proud to be a Democrat.
