Our Party BlogHave your say about all things democraticFebruary 28, 2008STATE REPUBLICAN PARTY SHOULD ERASE FROM WEBSITE APPEALS TO RACISM, HATRED, & DIVISION
In a press release yesterday, the Tennessee Republican Party accused presidential hopeful Barack Obama of being in league with anti-semitic groups (see "Anti-Semites for Obama").Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Gray Sasser responded quickly and is quoted in the Chattanooga Times Free Press this morning as saying that "the tone and the accuracy of this release unfortunately is what we have come to expect from the Tennessee Republican Party in recent times, and this release is the worst of the bunch. [It] amplifies misinformation, discredited tall tales, and Internet innuendo to appeal to the worst in people." In the Republican press statement, Robin Smith, chairperson of the state Republican Party, said this: "It's time to set the record straight about Barack Obama and where he really stands on vital issues such as national security and the security of Israel. Voters need to know about two items that surfaced today which strongly suggest that an Obama presidency will view Israel as a problem rather than a partner for peace in the Middle East." Yet this appeal to racism, hatred, and division has been rejected by the National Republican Party's own frontrunner, Senator John McCain, when two days ago he apologized three times for the anti-semitic and racist remarks by a right-wing talk show host in Cincinnati, Bill Cunningham. Furthermore, McCain made it clear that "he rejects these sort of tactics and will campaign on his record." The Hamilton County Democratic Party would like to join statewide those Democrats calling for the Tennessee Republican Party to erase such racist items from its website. This post has 3 replies...
