Our Party BlogHave your say about all things democraticNovember 11, 2008THANKS TO THE HUNDREDS WHO WORKED
I want to thank again the hundreds of volunteers in Hamilton County who worked for Barack Obama and Joe Biden, many of whom traveled to North Carolina to help win that state for Democrats. While the Hamilton County Democratic Party supported these efforts, we also had many who worked hard here to get the vote out for Democrats. So it should come as no surprise that Democrats won overwhelmingly the city of Chattanooga for Obama. Furthermore, our talented Hamilton County Democratic state legislators - Senator Andy Berke, Representative JoAnne Favors, and Representative Tommie Brown - had huge wins too. Berke, Favors, and Brown are some of the most caring, socially conscious yet practical Democrats returning to the 2009 General Assembly. I am proud of them. They will serve this state well, as they already have. Although Bob Tuke did not win, he ran admirably for U.S. Senate against Lamar Alexander. Tuke, a Vietnam War veteran, is one of the brightest candidates we have had run statewide. And to his credit, he ran without the kind of targeted resources that other battleground states for the U.S. Senate received. Without those kind of resources, it is very hard to be extremely competitive. Finally, I am so proud of our amazing campaign workers and field staff. They worked nonstop through the summer to Election Day. They registered voters, made calls, knocked on doors, put up signs, drove voters to the polls, and worked at the polls. It is clear that the Hamilton County Democratic Party has grown and been energized by our state leaders - Berke, Favors, and Brown - as well as Obama's appeal to a "new era in politics," one defined more by what we can do together than the what we can do apart.
